About us

Once upon a Time…

On the slopes of Mt. Etna, where crumbling lava meets the snows, the towns and neighborhoods often have bizarre names, names that might have been invented for a precocious child during a bedtime story: “Chiappemacine,” or stone bum, “Montedolce,” the sweet hill, “Linguaglossa,“ glossy tongue. And it is on these slopes, in Passopisciaro, that our story begins: an ancient story, like the land from which it was born, a story of the land and of love…all bathed in wine.
Once upon a time, a grown man, with a wife and children, was so lost in love with his new mistress that he dedicated all his free time to her; and she, in exchange, gave him a precious gift. The man was Don Michele Pennisi, cardiologist, and his mistress, a vineyard of 8 hectares. The gift? A rare and rewarding wine.
In the early years, he made this wine using only the grapes he produced himself and thus, was limited to a very small quantity. But his passion for his mistress and their wine coursed through his veins like his own blood and he wanted to increase his production and to share this gift.
In 1994, Don Michele was joined in this venture by Vito, his faithful farmer, and together, they shared their passion for winemaking and their knowledge of the land with future generations. His entire life was spent dividing his attention and professionalism between his patients and his vineyard, and when Don Michele died in 2006, his son Vincenzo was prepared to follow in his father’s footsteps.

And Then…

Vincenzo, although a geologist by training, began his new adventure by looking outside the territory. He wanted to commercialize and distribute this wine beyond its borders and for this, he needed a name that evoked both the story of the vineyard and the man in whose care it achieved such excellence. There was no doubt that these new red, white and rose’ wines would be known by the label, DON MICHELE.
IN 2012, his siblings, Giuseppe, a doctor living in Turin, and Giuseppina, a biologist in Catania, took the helm of the family vineyard. Despite the distances between them and their homeland, and multiple obstacles to overcome, their abiding love and respect for these wines and their father energized their efforts to continue his quest for excellence.
And just like before, the vines of this land, a demanding but generous mistress, responded richly to those who had devoted care and affection. Although they were forced to sell almost all of the harvest to others, they retained enough of the select grapes to produce 1500 bottles under the DON MICHELE label. This valuable limited edition is considered by leading experts to be a wine of great finesse and charm.

So our story of DON MICHELE continues….

The vines of DON MICHELE, the median age of which is 80 years old, are cultivated at 650 meters above sea level in basalt-based soil, rich in silica, iron, copper, magnesium and other minerals.
The wine ages in barriques for about a year.
The primary grape is Nerello Mascalese, a highly regarded variety that originated in Sicily.
These factors create a wine that is pleasing and mellow. The aroma is both intensely fruity with notes of mellow spiciness. Also apparent is a graceful minerality and freshness, surprising for wines of this type.
